Obituary

Paul J. Costolanski, 97, of Charleroi, died on Monday, June 25, 2018, in Havencrest Nursing Center in Monongahela.  He was born in Charleroi on August 12, 1920, to Stefan and Paulina Vajci Kostolansky.  A graduate of Charleroi High School and the University of Pittsburgh, Paul was a World War II veteran, serving with the US Marine Corps and the US Navy.  His last name became misspelled when he enlisted and remained so for the rest of his life.  For many years he worked as an analyst on Eastern Europe in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research at the Department of State in Washington, D.C.  He retired in 1986. Paul was preceded in death by his parents and all his siblings: Joseph "Corky" (Ann) Kostolansky, of Donora, Stephanie (Carl) Townsend, of Weirton, WV, Steve (Mary) Kostolansky, of Charleroi, and John (Norma) Kostolansky, of Clearwater, FL.  He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Elaine Porter Costolanski, of Charleroi; a daughter, Anne Stefanie Costolanski, of Marietta, GA; a son, Peter Costolanski, of Washington, D.C.; and many much-loved nieces and nephews. 
Paul was intensely proud of his Slovak heritage.  He enjoyed visiting relatives in Slovakia and traveling throughout Europe.  He appreciated good food and wine and was a gourmet cook and an avid reader.  There will be no public visitation.  Inurnment at the Belle Vernon Cemetery.
