Funeral services will be held Saturday morning;December 18;1965;for a former Belle Vernon man who was killed in an accident at the Gateway mine f Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation in Masontown on Wednesday;December 15;1965. Nick Sabolek;51;of River Ave.;Masontown;had lived all his life in Belle Vernon until two years ago. He was killed instantly at 3 a.m.when the boom of a continuous miner smashed him against the mine wall. Death was attributed to a crushed chest. He was a mine mechanic for the Gateway Mine;owned by three steel producers;J&L;Pittsburgh Steel and Shenango Inc.He was a member of All Saints R.C.Church;Masontown;Knights of Columbus;Masontown and United Mine Workers of America Local 6330. Surviving are his widow;Cora Lyons Sabolek;one son;Richard of Akron;Ohio;a daughter;Mrs.James (Patricia) Weisner of Streetsboro;Ohio;five grandchildren;three brothers;Steve;Joseph and Thomas;all of Belle Vernon. Friends will be received after 2 p.m.Thursday at the Yoney Funeral Home;Masontown;where a short prayer service will be held at 8:45 a.m.Saturday followed by a Requiem High Mass at 9 a.m.in All Saints Church. Burial will be in Belle Vernon Cemetery. Mine officials said an investigation will be held to determine the cause of the fatal accident.
