Obituary

Funeral services will be held Saturday morning,December 18,1965,for a former Belle Vernon man who was killed in an accident at the Gateway mine of Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation in Masontown on Wednesday,December 15,1965. Nick Sabolek,51,of River Ave.,Masontown,had lived all his life in Belle Vernon until two years ago. He was killed instantly at 3 a.m.when the boom of a continuous miner smashed him against the mine wall. Death was attributed to a crushed chest. He was a mine mechanic for the Gateway Mine,owned by three steel producers,J&L,Pittsburgh Steel and Shenango Inc.He was a member of All Saints R.C.Church,Masontown,Knights of Columbus,Masontown and United Mine Workers of America Local 6330. Surviving are his widow,Cora Lyons Sabolek,one son,Richard of Akron,Ohio,a daughter,Mrs.James (Patricia) Weisner of Streetsboro,Ohio,five grandchildren,three brothers,Steve,Joseph and Thomas,all of Belle Vernon. Friends will be received after 2 p.m.Thursday at the Yoney Funeral Home,Masontown,where a short prayer service will be held at 8:45 a.m.Saturday followed by a Requiem High Mass at 9 a.m.in All Saints Church. Burial will be in Belle Vernon Cemetery. Mine officials said an investigation will be held to determine the cause of the fatal accident.
