Obituary

Nathan Goff Jr.,president of the Mon Valley Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP),died Wednesday,April 22,1981 in the Mon Valley Hospital,Inc.,Carroll Twp. Mr.Goff,56,had resided at 7 Birch St.,Charleroi. Born Sept.8,1924 in Charleroi,he was the son of the late Nathan Goff Sr.and Clara Grable Goff. Mr.Goff was active in a number of civic and community projects in the Mon Valley. He had served as president of the Mon Valley NAACP for the past eight years and was a member of the Pennsylvania State Conference of the NAACP,serving on the political action committee. Mr.Goff was initially named to the NAACP presidency in the Mon Valley to fill a vacancy created by the death of Mr.Harry McGraw of Monessen. Mr.Goff then won election to a full two-year term in 1974 and was re-elected in 1976,1978 and 1980. He was a member of the Washington County Housing Authority and had served as the authority's secretary. He also was a former member of the Board of Directors of United Way of Mon Valley. Mr.Goff retired as a postal carrier with the U.S.Postal Service in 1978,working from the Charleroi Post office,with 27 years of service. He was a graduate of Charleroi Area High School,where he starred as a football player,and was a World War II veteran,having served with the U.S.Army. An active member of the Antioch Baptist Church,Belle Vernon,Mr.Goff had served as a trustee of the church,president of the Building Fund,and an assistant Sunday School teacher in the adult class. He was also a member of the Antioch Baptist Church prayer band. Mr.Goff was a member and past master of the Twin Lodge No.67,F&AM,Pricedale. Also,he was a member of the Most Excellent Grand Chapter,Holy Royal Arch,Masons of Pennsylvania,Prince Hall affiliate,and the Eleventh Masonic District,serving as chairman of education. He was also a member of the OK Lodge No.697,I.B.P.O.E.of W.and the American Legion William E.Owens Post 695,both of Monessen. Survivors include his widow,Mary Ann Wilson Goff,two sons,Nathan Goff III at home and Keith Goff of Brooklyn,N.Y.,a daughter,Natalie Goff of Hempstead,Long Island,N.Y.,a sister,Audrey Goff of Cleveland,Ohio,two brothers,Robert H.Goff of New york City and Gilbert Goff of Yonkers,N.Y.,and a host of nieces,nephews and cousins. Friends will be received in the William R.Taylor Funeral Home,615 McMahon Ave.,Monessen,on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.and Friday from noon to 2 p.m. At that time,Mr.Goff will be taken to the Antioch Baptist Church,Belle Vernon,and will lie in state there until Saturday at 11 a.m.,the time of service. Officiating will be the Rev.Luther Wormack,pastor. Interment will be in Belle Vernon Cemetery. Masonic services will be held Friday evening at the church. The William R.Taylor Funeral Home is in cahrge of arrangements.
