Obituary

Myrtle Sanderson Johnston, 91, of North Belle Vernon, died Monday, Dec. 28, 2009, at Rehabilitation & Nursing Center at Greater Pittsburgh, Greensburg. Born July 16, 1918, in North Belle Vernon, she was the daughter of the late William and Augusta Westburg Sanderson. A lifelong resident of North Belle Vernon, Mrs. Johnston was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Belle Vernon, where she was an Elder, Deacon and Sunday School Teacher, a member of the Monongahela Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 108 (formerly the Belle Vernon Chapter 196) for over 50 years, serving as treasurer, worthy matron and district deputy. Myrtle was a retired, self-employed beautician and served as a Girl Scout Leader for many years. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Linda and Fred Aten of Belle Vernon, Nancy Johnston of Youngwood, three grandchildren, Susan Aten of Belle Vernon, Robert and wife Lisa Aten of Pittsburgh, Natalie Johnston of Youngwood, three great-grandchildren, Madison, Olivia and Spencer Aten, and her constant companion, Honey. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert M. Johnston, on Sept. 2, 1997, three brothers, Guy, Edward and William Sanderson, and a sister, Margaret Sanderson. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the LEONARD J. PARZYNSKI FUNERAL HOME, Family Owned and Operated, 626 Broad Ave., Belle Vernon, 724-929-6183. Additional visitation will be held Wednesday from 9 to 11 a.m., followed by funeral services at 11 a.m. in the Leonard J. Parzynski Funeral Home, with the Rev. Suzanne Currie of First Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment will take place in Belle Vernon Cemetery. Elders and the Board of Deacons from the First Presbyterian Church will pay their respects Tuesday at 7 p.m., and the Monongahela Order of Eastern Star will conduct services Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. The family suggests memorial contributions be made in memory of Myrtle Johnston to First Presbyterian Church of Belle Vernon or to the Pet Adoption League of Yukon.
