Obituary

Mike Gombo, 91, formerly of Belle Vernon, went to be with The Lord on Sunday, November 26, 2017 in McMurray Hills Manor. A son of the late John Gombo, Sr. and Mary Bitsko, he was born in Monessen on February 11, 1926. Mike was a member of the Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church, the Belle Vernon American Legion, Post 659, Local 1187 Steelworkers Union, and for the past five years, he enjoyed golfing in the Willowbrook Golf League. He retired from the Allenport Plant of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corporation in 1980 after 36 years of service. He was a Corporal in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Darcie L. and Douglas Burkholder, of Peters Township, with whom he recently made his home, three grandchildren; Brandon Michael Burkholder, of Atlanta, GA, Jared Joseph Burkholder and his wife, Reylen, of Holly Springs, NC, and Devon Leigh Burkholder, of Pittsburgh, and two great-grandchildren; Mikayla L. Burkholder and Brianah B. Burkholder. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Bacala Gombo on December 28, 2010, a brother, John Gombo, and two sisters; Anna Mary (Gombo) Michaels and Irene (Gombo) Durmis. Funeral services will be held at the Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church in Belle Vernon on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at 9:00 A.M. with Father Samuel Smolcic officiating. Interment will follow in Belle Vernon Cemetery.
