Obituary

Funeral services were held Tuesday morning for Michael J.Mitchell of 1360 Fayette Ave.,Belle Vernon (Fairhope),who died Sunday,July 3,1988,at 10:30 a.m.in Jefferson Center Hospital. He was 90. Mr.Mitchell was born Feb.25,1898,in Belle Vernon,a son of the late Carmen and Mary Paglial Mitchell. A lifelong resident of the Belle Vernon area,he was Catholic. At the time of his death,Mr.Mitchell was serving as an auditor for Washington Township,a position he held for 12 years. He was a past president and officer of the Washington Township School Board,and was a member and the first fire chief of the Washington Township Fire Department. He had also served as Judge of Elections in Washington Township for 12 years. He was a member and past president of the Washington Township Lions Club,and was past president of the Fayette County Fish and Game Commission. A member of the Fayette County Sportsmen's Association,Mr.Mitchell was a Lifetime Master of the National Rifle Association. He was a charter member of the Fairhope Rod and Gun Club and was a member of the organization's bowling league. Mr.Mitchell was a member of the Belle Vernon Musical Society and was a sociel member of Belle Vernon American Legion Post 659. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters,Louis Mitchell,Frank Mitchell,James Mitchell,Irma Nardi and Madeline Zucconi. Survivors include his wife,Sue Janus Mitchell,three daughters,Mrs.Edward (Lydia) Urbany of Torrance,Calif.,Mrs.Leo (Vera) McDermott of Allenport and Shirley Toward Gelcheiser of Elizabeth Township,one sister,Carrie Rossi of Belle Vernon,eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Friends were received Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Leonard J.Parzynski Funeral Home,626 Broad Ave.,Belle Vernon,where a blessing service was held today at 10:30 a.m.followed by burial in Belle Vernon Cemetery. The Washington Township Fire Department held services Monday afternoon in the funeral home.
