Obituary

Killed in action during the Korean Campaign,the body of Cpl.Melvin Watkins,son of Mr.and Mrs.Albert Watkins,414 May street,Belle Vernon,is due to arrive home for burial Monday afternoon,Oct.25,1954. The Department of Defense in an official telegram notified Mr.Watkins as follows: Remains of Corporal Melvin Watkins,U.S.Army,escorted by Master Sergeant Willard Tillman,departing Jersey City Monday,October 25,arriving in West Newton Baltimore and Ohio station Oct.25 at 4:44 p.m. The body will be received there and removed to the Toner Funeral Home,North Belle Vernon. Cpl.Watkin's body was found in a fox-hole where he had been killed by enemy fire. The remains were temporarily interred in Korea and have just recently reached the Jersey City clearing center. Surviving are his father,Albert Watkins,two sisters,Kathryn and Margaret,both at home,three brothers,Raymond,Albert,Jr.and Robert,all of Belle Vernon. Friends will be received at the Antioch Baptist Church,Henry street,Belle Vernon,beginning at 1 p.m.Tuesday,Oct.26. Funeral services will be held from there,Thursday,Oct.28,at 11 a.m.,with Rev.A.C.Morris officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the American Legion,Joseph H.Ford Post 691,Monessen,and the Belle Vernon Post 659,American Legion. Interment will follow in Soldiers Memorial Plot,Belle Vernon Cemetery. Harold R.Toner,Broad avenue,Belle Vernon,funeral director.
