Obituary

May Higby Rasco, of Monessen, passed away Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004, at her home. She was born in Scott Haven, Pa., Dec. 2, 1917, daughter of the late James and Ada Hughes Higby. She was a graduate of Sewickley Township High School and California State Teachers College. She spent her years of teaching in the country schools of Scott Haven and Cowansburg, Pa. May had beautiful handwriting and was offered a teaching position to travel to local schools and teach the Peterson Handwriting Method, but she preferred to stay at the one-room schoolhouse where she taught over 50 pupils, grades one through six. During World War II, she contributed to the war effort by working at the Christy Park Works. She was a member and deacon of the First Presbyterian Church of Monessen for many years. In 1949, she married Thomas Rasco, who died in August 1997. She is the beloved mother of two daughters, Kathy Striker and Peggy Frances Bilsky, and one stepson, Thomas Rasco, loving grandmother of Cindy Reichert, Lisa May Reichert, Erik Striker, Michael Rasco and Melissa Bilsky Lemley, and two great-grandsons, Kaleb and Jayden Lemley. Also surviving are two sisters, Peg Kozar and Frances Hough. Funeral services will be held in the chapel of the RHOME FUNERAL HOME INC., 1209 Grand Blvd., Monessen, Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Frank Rocco officiating. Interment will follow in Belle Vernon Cemetery.
