Obituary

Martha Jane Cathers Kunka, 77, of Belle Vernon, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2006, at 11:45 p.m. at Havencrest Nursing Home, Carroll Township. Born Dec. 26, 1928, in Monessen, she was the daughter of the late William E. and Darling Harris Cathers. A lifelong resident of Belle Vernon, Mrs. Kunka was a member of First Christian Church of Monessen, and a homemaker. She was honored for 38 years of service by the National Association for Women's Gymnastic Judges (NAWGJ), was affiliated with the USA Gymnastics and WPIAL, and the Atlantic 10 Conference. Mrs. Kunka was a member of the Slovak Gymnastic Union Sokol Lodge 47 and the Citizens Association of Pricedale. She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Monte and Toni-Jo Kunka, of Rostraver Township, and Kurt Kunka, of State College, three daughters and sons-in-law, Kimberly and Larry Garr, of Upper Marlboro, Md., Lori Holland, of Rochester, Mich., and Jody (Parente) and Larry Hussar, of Washington Township, five grandchildren, Jeremy Holland, Jessica and Jeff Parente, Jillian Kunka and Brittany Garr, three brothers and sisters-in-law, William and Pearl Cathers, of Belle Vernon (Lynnwood), David and Joanne Cathers, of Georgia, and Timothy Cathers, of Belle Vernon (Fairhope), a sister, Ruth Ann Antonelli, of Belle Vernon (Fairhope), several nieces and nephews, and many special friends, including her dear friend, Betty Malinchak, of Monessen. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Kunka, on Oct. 21, 2004, and a brother, Robert Allen Cathers, in January 2006. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the LEONARD J. PARZYNSKI FUNERAL HOME, family owned and operated, 626 Broad Ave., Belle Vernon (724-929-6183). Services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 27 in the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Conrad Auel, pastor of First Christian Church of Monessen, officiating. Interment will take place in Belle Vernon Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions be made in memory of Martha Jane Kunka to the American Cancer Society.
