Lucy Welty Newhouse, 87, of Belle Vernon, passed away at Victoria House in Monessen on Feb. 22, 2015. Born June 26, 1927, in Herminie, she was the daughter of the late Frank Welty and Grace Lohr Welty. She was a graduate of the Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing, with the Class of 1949. She was active in the Cancer Clinic at the former Charleroi Monessen Hospital. Employed as a visiting nurse for Mon Valley United Health Services, she served as Director of Visiting Nurses for 10 years until her retirement in 1989. She also served as Secretary to the Western Pennsylvania Association of Home Health Agencies. Lucy was a member of the Board of Directors of the American Red Cross, Mon Valley Chapter, and a former member of the Board of Directors of the United Way of Mon Valley. She was on the Advisory Council of Professional Personnel for Health Plus Inc., Mon Valley United Health Services. In addition, she was active as a volunteer at bloodmobiles throughout the Mon Valley for many years, and participated in the flu shot clinics for Health Plus Inc. Lucy was a member of St. Sebastian Roman Catholic Church in Belle Vernon, and the Tuesday Evening Civic Club, where she served as vice president. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Dr. Joseph J. Newhouse in 1992; two brothers, Paul Welty in 1996 and Robert Welty in 2010; and one sister, Mary Welty Olfert in 2007. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Joseph R. Newhouse and Noreen Newhouse; granddaughters, Samantha Newhouse Dawson (Jonathan) and Audrey Halgas; and a great-granddaughter, Gianna Virginia Dawson, all of Belle Vernon, along with nieces, nephews, and cousins. A blessing service will be in the funeral home at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday followed by a funeral Mass at 1 p.m. in St. Sebastian Roman Catholic Church with the Rev. Msgr. Roger A. Statnick as celebrant. Entombment will follow in Belle Vernon Cemetery.
