Obituary

Lionel Joe Diethorn, 77, of Rostraver Township, died Saturday, June 8, 2002, at 2:15 a.m. at his home surrounded by his family. Born Aug. 18, 1924, in Belle Vernon, he was the son of the late George F. and Teresa Magdalene Funk Diethorn. Mr. Diethorn was a resident of Rostraver Township for 23 years, a member of St. Sebastian Roman Catholic Church, Belle Vernon, and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was the former owner and operator of a service station located along Donner Avenue in Monessen from 1952 to 1972 and retired as a foreman, having worked for several major construction companies in the Mon Valley. Mr. Diethorn was a member of the Belle Vernon Knights of Columbus Council 3026. He is survived by his wife, May Cain Diethorn, to whom he was married 55 years, three daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Richard Bronder of Woodstock, N.Y., Nancy and Bruce Raymond of La Grange, N.Y., and Marylou and Ronald Todd of Jeannette, three brothers and sisters-in-law, George W. and Dorothy Diethorn of Monessen, Walter L. and Darlene Diethorn of Belle Vernon, and Dennis Thomas and Crystal Diethorn of Fallowfield Township, one sister, Mildred Allfree of Charleroi, two brothers-in-law, James McManus and Joseph Sabol of Belle Vernon, six grandchildren, Shelley Savatgy, Craig Bronder, Melanie Metz, Erin Todd, Amanda Raymond and Becky Raymond, two great-grandchildren, Lily and Quinn Savatgy. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Catherine Boltze, Evelyn McManus and Phyllis Sabol. Visitation will be held Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the LEONARD J. PARZYNSKI FUNERAL HOME, Family Owned and Operated, 626 Broad Ave., Belle Vernon. A prayer service will be held Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Sebastian R.C. Church, Belle Vernon, with the Rev. E. George Saletrik, Parochial Vicar, officiating. Interment will be in Belle Vernon Cemetery. Members of St. Sebastian Parish will pray the rosary for the departed soul of Lionel J. Diethorn Monday at 3 p.m., the North Belle Vernon Fire Department will conduct services Monday evening at 7, the Belle Vernon Knights of Columbus Council 3026 will conduct services at 7:30 p.m., and the Belle Vernon Lions Club will pay their respects at 8 p.m. in the funeral home. The family suggests contributions in memory of Lionel J. Diethorn be made to the charity of one's choice.
