Obituary

Joseph Surovchak,82,of Salem Church Rd.,Belle Vernon R.D.4,died on Thursday,Aug.1,1991,at his home. He was born March 14,1909,in Rostraver Township,the son of the late Michael and Katherine Sedlacek Surovchak. A salesman,he sold some of the very first Maytag washers in Monessen during the middle 1920s. He started as a salesman for Potter McCune Co.in Monessen in 1930,having served mom & pop stores carrying 200-900 grocery items. He retired in 1974 after introducing several thousand new items to supermarkets in seven counties. Mr.Surovchak was a member of St.Paul Lutheran Church,Monessen,where he had held many positions through the years,including Sunday School superintendent,secretary of the church council,usher and many other committees. He was also a member of the Monessen AARP,where he was a charter member and one of the founders. He belonged to many other organizations and had been an avid bowler on many championship teams. In addition to his parents,he was preceded in death by his first wife,Mary Matyas Surovchak,a son,William Surovchak,four brothers,Paul,Andrew,Emil and Jerry,and two sisters,Katherine Surovchak and Anna Surovchak Polacek. He is survived by his wife,Glenda R.Surovchak,whom he married in 1960,two sons and daughters-in-law,Richard and Marci Surovchak of Bethel Park and Jack C.and Carol Stanley of Keller,Texas,six grandchildren,Scott,William,Kevin and Robert Surovchak and Glenn and Lara Stanley,a sister,Mrs.Susan Surovchak Zippay of Charleroi,and a brother,Michael Surovchak of Charleroi. Friends will be received at the Rhome Funeral Home Inc.,1209 Grand Blvd.,Monessen,on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m.and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Monday with prayers at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m.,followed by funeral services at St.Paul Lutheran Church,Monessen,at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Belle Vernon Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St.Paul Lutheran Church. The Rhome Funeral Home Inc.is in charge of the arrangements.
