Obituary

Donora Police Chief Jose Popeye Alvarez Jr. of Palmer Park, Donora. died Thursday, Oct. 27, 1998, at 6:54 p.m. in Mon Valley Hospital after being stricken by an apparent heart attack. He was 58. Mr. Alvarez was born March 16, 1930, in New Eagle, a son of Mary Campa Alvarez of Donora and the late Jose Alvarez Sr. He had been a police officer in the Borough of Donora since 1954, and was named chief in 1976. A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, Mr. Alvarez was a member of the Mon Valley Police Chiefs Association and Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 87. A 1948 graduate of Donora high School,he was also a member of the Spanish Club and Ernest E.Jobes Post 212 American Legion,both in Donora. In addition to his mother,survivors include his wife,Shirley Louise Alvarez,a daughter, Mrs John (Twila Marie) Rank of Houston,Texas,one son,Jose Alvarez III at home,a grandson,James Joseph Rank,a granddaughter,Hallie Kay Rank,many aunts,uncles,nieces and nephews. Friends will be received Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.in the James A.Rabe Funeral Home,701 Thompson Ave.,Donora,where services will be held Monday,Oct.31,1988,at 10 a.m.with the Rev.Andrew G.Slade,pastor of Calvary United Presbyterian Church of Donora,officiating. Burial will be in Belle Vernon Cemetery. The James A. Rabe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
