Obituary

John Thomas Tom Manning Jr., 58, of Cortland, Ohio, died Saturday, July 12, 2003, in Forum Trumbull Memorial Hospital, Warren, Ohio. A son of the late John Thomas and Margaret Peggy Jacobs Manning, he was born in Charleroi on Aug. 19, 1944. Mr. Manning was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Vietnam, and he was a member of the Cortland United Methodist Church. Mr. Manning graduated from Bellmar High School and received his bachelor of science degree in education from California State College and earned his master's degree in education from Kent State University. He did post graduate work in educational administration at Kent State and Youngstown State universities, The University of Dayton and Ashland College. Mr. Manning was employed by Washington County (Pa.) and Warren City (Ohio) schools as a speech and hearing therapist, Berkshire local schools in Burton, Ohio, as an assistant high school principal and athletic director from 1974-1976, Champion local schools as assistant high school principal from 1976-1980, Joseph Badger local schools as high school and middle school principal from 1980-1989, and middle school principal for Champion local schools from 1989 until his retirement in 1995. Survivors include his wife, Joyce D. Legg Manning, whom he married Jan. 22, 1966, two daughters and sons-in-law, Shani and Robert Haught of Delaware, Ohio, and Vikki and Matthew Kaiser of North Royalton, Ohio, one granddaughter, Baili Haught, one grandson, Colton Haught, one brother, Larry Manning of Des Moines, Iowa, one sister, Kathy Acton of Stow, Ohio, and one nephew, Larry Acton Jr. of Kent, Ohio. Friends will be received Wednesday from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME INC., a Golden Rule Member Firm, (724-929-5300), 700 Broad Ave., Belle Vernon. Committal services will follow in the Belle Vernon Cemetery Chapel. If friends wish, contributions may be made in Mr. Manning's name to the American Diabetes Association or the Cortland United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
