Obituary

John was the eldest of eight children, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 11 Oct 1831, to Captain William and Elizabeth (Sharpe) Henry, of Millville, New Jersey. His mother had been on a family visit to Philadelphia when John was born. His father was a sea captain and at the age of nine, John shipped as a cabin boy. At 16, he began working at a window glass factory and learned the trade of cutter which he did until he was 66 years old with the exception of taking a one year break to once again work on coastal vessels plying between Philadelphia, Boston and Charleston. On 15 Jan 1854, he married Martha Barrett at Mays Landing, New Jersey. They lived a few years in Pittsburgh, and landed in Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania, where Henry Street was named for him. They had eight children and he was devoted to the welfare of his family. John was not a public man, but was interested in the development of his community and served on the school board, was elected to council, and was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He maintained splendid health and vigor through life and battled nephritis the last three years of his life, succumbing to death on 21 Dec 1909.
