Rev. John S. Smith,aged 73 years,pastor of St. James A.M.E. Church of Washignton Avenue,died at his home,721 Washington Averue at 5:30 a.m,Saturday, May 16,1942,after an illness of about one year. Born at Stuart's Draft, Va.,on November 16,1869,he attended public schools and completed his education at Morgan College,Baltimore. For more that 40 years he followed the ministry and came to Monessen in September,1937,subsequently preaching at Brownsville and later in Charleroi,where his service and his tall (6 feet 5 inches) stature made him well known as a figure in town. He is survived by his wife,Eliza A. Brown and the following brothers and one sister, Elijah L. of Charleroi,W.C. Smith of Chareloi,Hiram T. of Charleroi,Julius W. of Duquesne and Sarah C.Smith of Charleroi. He held an honored place in the affairs of the church and was in wide demand in the years when advancing years had not required that he limit his work to his home parish. The remains are at the late home where friends will be received until time for funeral services at 2 p.m.,Wednesday,May 20,in St. James A.M.E. Church. Dr. W.H. Truss of Pittsburgh,presiding elder of the A.M.E. Churches of the Pittsburgh district,will have charge. The interment will be in Belle Vernon Cemetery. Lawrence B. Frye is the funeral director in charge.
