Obituary

John Mallino Sr.,48,of 1014 Rostraver St.,Monessen,a well known sports enthusiast,suffered a fatal heart attack Wednesday afternoon,Sept.6,1961,while visiting at Pennsylvania State University. Mr.Mallino was stricken while accompanying his son,David,18,to the university's pre-registration counseling. His son had enrolled as a Penn State freshman. The victim's wife,Martha,had accompanied her son and husband to the pre-counceling,which is required of all new students. The three were standing in line when the elder Mr.Mallno decided to go to a college shop and bring back soft drinks for himself,and his wife and son. As he was returning,he collapsed and died in the student Union Building on the campus. Mr.Mallino was born in Bingham,W.Va. He was a resident of Monessen most of his life. He attended Monessen High School and was active in Boy Scout work and sports. He was associated with Little League Basebell and was a charter member,director and treasurer of the Monessen Midget Football League. He belonged to the Monessen Lions Club and was a past president of the Monessen Football Parents Association. He was employed as a burner in the Mechanical Dept.of the Monessen plant of Pittsburgh Steel Co. He was a veteran member of Monessen Company D,110th Regiment,28th Infantry Division,Pa.National Guard. He served with the unit in 1950 at Camp Atterbury,Ind.,as it prepared for the Korean War. He belonged to St.Paul Lutheran Church. Besides his widow,Martha Joseph Mallino,and son,David,he is survived by two other sons,John (Jack) Jr.,and his wife Katheryne of Philadelphia,and Joseph at home,his parents,Mr.and Mrs.Joseph Mallino,two brothers,Anthony of Monessen and Joseph Jr.of Detroit,four sisters,Rose Mallino of Monessen,Isabelle Mallino of Los Angeles,Calif.,Mrs.Walter (Mary) Pustelak of Donora and Mrs.Michael (Yolanda) Guzanick of Monessen. Friends are being received at the Denver Rhome Funeral Home in Monessen where services will be held Sept.9 at 1:30 p.m.with the Rev.John Schulz,of St.Paul's Lutheran Church,officiating. Interment will be in Belle Vernon Cemetery. Denver Rhome,funeral director.
