John Popelas Jr.,66,of 567 Main St.,Belle Vernon,died Saturday, June 2,1990,at 5:15 a.m. at his home. He was born June 1,1924,in Fairhope, a son of the late John Sr. and Agnes Varchulik Popelas. Mr. Popelas was a member and former deacon of Peoples Bible Church,Belle Vernon. A lifelong resident of the Belle Vernon area,he retired in 1984 from the Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corporation's Monessen plant,where he had worked as a millwright. Mr. Popelas was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II. In addition to his parents,he was preceded in death by a son, Mark Anthony Popelas;a brother,Rudolph Popelas and a sister, Ann Chiste. Survivors include his wife, Julia Petrosky Popelas; three sons, John T. Popelas III of Belle Vernon,Robert Popelas of Monessen and George Popelas of Houston;one daughter, Mrs. Ray (Rose Marie) Marmie of Kailua Kona, Hawaii;one brother, Thomas Popelas of Johnstown;two sisters,Mary Jane Rudean of Monongahela and Agnes Peternel of West Newton and eight grandchildren. Friends will be received Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Ferguson Funeral Home,700 Broad Ave.,Belle Vernon,where services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. James Gardner,pastor of the Peoples Bible Church of Belle Vernon,officiating. Burial will be in Belle Vernon Cemetery. The Ferguson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
