Obituary

Capt. J.K. Hein,76, a Charleroi councilman for the past 20 years and a Spanish-American war veteran, was instantly killed at 6:30 a.m. Friday morning,Jan. 20,1933,when struck by an automobile while enroute to the MacBeth-Evans Glass company plant, where he was employed as a machinist. Police state that the car was driven by George Wilson of Bentleyville, son of the postmaster of that place.  The only witnesss to the accident was a small boy. Capt. Hein had left his home at 825 Fallowfield avenue enroute to his work and had traveled only a block when he was crossing McKean avenue at Eighth street to enter the gate of the glass plant. Mr. Wilson, enroute from Bentleyville to Donora, where he conducted a service station, did not see the man as he stepped from the curb at the crossing.  Capt. Heil was taken by ambulance to Charleroi-Monessen hospital, but his death was probably instataneous and the remains were taken to the Frye mortuary.  He was born in Pittsburgh on Jan. 10,1867,but had lived the greater part of his life in Charleroi. He was interested in civic affairs, particularly those which had to do with the improvement of the city. He was a member for many years of the National Guard in Pennsylvania and was on the detail guarding Johnstown during the great flood. He still took much interest in everything relating to the military relations of the nation.Capt.Hein was a member of all Masonic bodies and was active in interests of the war veterans and was instrumental in securing the Memorial plot for the Charleroi war veterans. A year or so ago he was instrumental,as a member of council,in having the traffic signal placed at Eighth street and McKean avenue,as an added protection for the employes of the Macbeth-Evans Glass Company.  He often expressed fear that someone would be struck by a speeding car in that section,as so many people cross there to the plant. Locally Capt. Hein had always taken a great interest in civic affairs and had been a member of the borough council for twenty years or more, serving as president of the organization several terms.  He was president for two terms immediately preceding the present council, when he was succeeded by H.S. Piersol. In the present council he was a member of Accounts and Claims,Ordinance and Printing,Sanitation and Memorial committees, being the sole member of the latter committee and had always taken great pride in keeping the Memorial plot in the best of shape,so that it would be one of the beauty spots of the city.  Members of council are making arrangements to attend the services Sunday afternoon in a body, and a floral tribute is being arranged from the organization. Fraternally Capt. Hein was affiliated with local and district Masonic organizations, being a member of Charleroi Lodge,No. 615,F.&A.M.;Monongahela Chapter,No.249,R.A. M.;Valley Council,No.49,R.S. M.;MeKean Commandery,No.80,Knights Templar;Pennsylvania Consistory of Pittsburgh;Syria Temple,A.A.O.N.M.S.and Masonic Veterans Association of Pittsburgh. He is survived by his wife, Clara M. Hein, one son, John F. Hein and a grandson,John F.,Jr., now stationed in the Navy at Quantico,Va.;two sisters, Mrs. John Mesher and Mrs. Mary Heilman, and one brother,Andrew Hein, all of Mckees Rocks.  Funeral services will be held from the late home Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in charge of Rev. M.R. Kunkleman, pastor of the Christ Lutheran Church. The funeral will be in charge of Charleroi lodge,Free and Accepted Masons of which the deceased was a member.  The brothers will meet at the lodge room at 1:30.  Services will be at the residence at 2:30.and burial will follow in the Belle Vernon Cemetery.
