A native of the Monongahela River valley, for half a century a pilot on river boats, Captain John H. Myers, 70 years old, of 333 Isabelle avenue, North Charleroi, succumbed at his home Sunday,August 6,1944 at 5:45 a. m. Capt. Myers has resided at North Charleroi for 50 years and had been retired from piloting for some time. He was born June 1, 1874, on the site of the present city of Monessen, and took to river boating as a career in the bygone days of the flatboat and packet. He was the son of Hiram H. and Elizabeth Foulks Myers,who were natives of this district. He was married,and his wife,Mrs. Clare M.Myers survives. Only other immediate survivor is Mrs. Dr. George T.Crosbie of Belle Vernon. Another sister,Mrs.Dr. O.J.Kreger,of Monessen,died in June 1936. Capt. Myers had a store of river knowledge and lore garnered from many years association with early pilots and masters on the three rivers. He was associated with the earliest days of boating and saw intimately the development of river locks and craft over an entire lifetime. He had friends in almost every river town and numbers among them surviving pilots of that haleyon era. Friends will be received at the late home,and services will be held there,Wednesday,August 9,1944,t 2:30 p.m. Rev. Byron R. Mahan will have charge of services and interment will follow in Belle Vernon Cemetery. Lawrence B.Frye is the funeral director.
