John F. Bendik; 81; of Belle Vernon; died Monday; Dec. 4; 2006; in the Victoria House; Monessen; following a lengthy illness. He was born June 10; 1925; in Ellsworth; a son of the late Joseph and Mary Bendik. He was a veteran of World War II; serving in the U.S. Navy as a gunner mate first class in the Pacific Theatre aboard the destroyers USS Cunningham and USS Baltimore; also in occupied Japan. For his service; Mr. Bendik was awarded the Pacific and American Theatre ribbons and a World War II Victory Medal. He owned and operated the Bentleyville and Monessen Florist shops for seven years and later became co-owner and operator of Bendik-Lancaster Buick in Charleroi; operating the dealership for over 21 years before retiring in 1989. Mr. Bendik was a 43-year member of St. Sebastian Roman Catholic Church in Belle Vernon. He also belonged to the Charleroi VFW and the Mon Valley Country Club. Mr. Bendik was an avid golfer and enjoyed fishing and playing cards. On Sept. 6; 1947 he married Mary Ann Frameli Bendik; who survives. He is also survived by one son; John Bendik Jr.; of Sarasota; Fla.; one daughter; Mary Ann Bendik-Charles; of Naples; Fla.; four grandchildren; John Bendik III; Jennifer Schee; Ryan Mercer and Jessica Bendik; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased; in addition to his parents; is one brother; Joseph Bendik; and two sisters; Helen Merashoff and Mary Bostitch. Friends will be received Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the GREENLEE FUNERAL HOME; 619 Main St.; Bentleyville; where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday; Dec. 7; with Pastor Jim Crosby officiating.
