Obituary

John Pakish Jr., of Reno, Nev., died Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005, in Saint Mary's Hospital in Reno. He was born June 8, 1929, in Webster, a son of the late John and Mary Pakish. He excelled in athletics and was inducted into the Belle Vernon Area Football Hall of Fame. John medically retired from the U.S. Army after serving in the Korean War and earning a Bronze Star. Upon retiring from the Army, Master Sergeant John Pakish earned a bachelor of arts and master of science degrees in physical education from San Francisco State University. He became a teacher, coach and athletic director at Gonzales Union High School. Coach Pakish retired to Reno after 20 years of teaching and coaching. John Pakish Jr. was active in athletics wherever he lived and will be remembered simply as Coach by many. He is survived by three sons, John, Craig (Linda) and Keith (Teresa), six grandchildren, Janelle, Bradley, Nathan, Jonathan, Steven and Jenifer, two brothers, George Pakish and Joseph Vuknic, and one sister, Irene Glass. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Laura Pakish, three brothers, Harry, Edward and Norman, and two sisters, Virginia and Mary. Memorial services will be held at the O'BRIEN-ROGERS & CROSBY FUNERAL HOME, 600 West Second St., Reno, Nev., on Sunday, Oct. 2, at 3:30 p.m. Coach Pakish's final resting place will be Belle Vernon Cemetery. A small service will be held for John and Laura Pakish in the Belle Vernon Cemetery Chapel on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 11 a.m. for family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to: Gonzales Booster Club, 31958 Gloria Rd., Gonzales, Calif. 93926, or to any Police Athletic League (PAL) in the Mon Valley area.
