Obituary

Jay S. Smith, 89, of Monessen, died Sunday, Dec. 11, 2011, in the Residence at Hilltop, Carroll Township. He was born April 27, 1922, in Monessen, a son of the late George and Grace Bedsworth Smith. He was a member of First Christian Church of Monessen, a Life Member of the Monessen Volunteer Fire Dept. Co. No. 2 and the American Legion. Jay was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army Air Force. He had been employed at American Chain and Cable Co., Pages Division and Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel, Allenport Plant, prior to his retirement. Surviving are two daughters, Beverly and husband, Joe Valente, of Crafton, and Karen and husband, Ted Haluschak, of Charleroi, grandchildren, Jenny Valente, Lisa and husband, Carl Smith, Joe and wife, Melanie Valente Jr., Maria Stasko and companion, Wally Stelma, Jimmy and wife, Margaret Stasko Jr., Heather and husband, Gary Zippay, Samantha Haluschak, and Nicole Haluschak, great-grandchildren, Michael, Tommy, Greg, Alyssa, Reece, Victoria, and Aiden, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Leona M. Midge Kidwell Smith, and two brothers, Vernon and John Calvin Smith, also a son-in-law, Jim Stasko. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the RHOME FUNERAL HOME INC., Family Owned and Operated as a Member of the Golden Rule, 1209 Grand Blvd., Monessen, where friends will be welcomed from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 13. Services will be held in the funeral home on Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Conrad Auel officiating. Interment will follow in the Belle Vernon Cemetery.
