Obituary

James Vance of 816 Speer St.,Belle Vernon,died at 5.30 a m. Wednesday, May 8,1985,at his home. He was 96. Born in Scottdale, March 19,1889, he was a son of the late Smith Fuller and Mary Hengsteller Vance. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Vance Bunardzya on Aug 13, 1979,two brothers,John Vance and Clark Vance, and a sister, Florence Kelly. Mr Vance was a Belle Vernon community resident since 1910. He owned Vance Hardware in North Belle Vernon, which he operated for 52 years until his retirement in 1975. He was a member and former trustee of the First Presbyterian Church of Belle Vernon and a board member and president of the Belle Vernon Cemetery Association for over 50 years. Mr Vance was a life member of the North Belle Vernon Volunteer Fire Department and was a Belle Vernon school director for over 20 years. Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Mrs Bernadean Laird Vance, one son,James Sherman Russell of Belle Vernon, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Friends will be received Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Shelby D.Ferguson Funeral Home,700 Broad Ave.,Belle Vernon,where funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. with Rev.Charles D.LaPlaca,pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Belle Vernon officiating. Interment will follow in Belle Vernon Cemetery. Shelby D.Ferguson,funeral director,is in charge.
