Obituary

James C. Chinny Johnston, 93, of Speers Hill, passed away Monday, July 8, 2013, in Lafayette, La. A son of the late Robert and Isabell Carrick Johnston, he was born in Floreffe, Jan. 24, 1920. James was a member of the Pricedale Union Church, Russian Club of Charleroi and, during his years at the former Rostraver High School, was a star basketball player. He worked as a steel worker at the Allenport Plant of Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel until his retirement in 1979. He served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Crowley during World War II, and was awarded six battle stars during his service. Jim was an avid gardener and was well known for his prized tomatoes. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Catherine Kornosky Johnston of Speers Hill, one son, James Johnston of Crownsville, Md., two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and David Johnson of Barnesville, Md., and Kim and John Krener of Lafayette, La., one sister, Florence Weir of Rostraver Township, and six grandchildren, James Johnston III, Scott Johnston, David Johnson, Abby Johnson, John Cody Krener and Cole Krener. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Agnes Krett, Isabell Johnston and Martha McBride, and two brothers, Thomas and Robert Johnston. Friends will be received 2 to 5 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013, the time of services, in the FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY INC., Belle Vernon, 724-929-5300, http://www.FergusonFuneralHomeAndCrematory.com. A funeral service will be held 5 p.m. Aug. 11, 2013, in the funeral home Sunday, with Pastor James Mimidis officiating. Graveside committal services will be held 10 a.m. Aug. 12, 2013, Monday, in the Belle Vernon Cemetery. If friends wish, memorial donations can be made to the Pricedale Union Church.
