Obituary

 

Herbert James Buddy Boy Smith Sr., 87, of Newport News, Va., formerly of Monessen, was called to his heavenly home on Monday evening, Dec. 30, 2013. He entered into eternal rest while surrounded by his loving family and an excellent team of medical staff members at Mary Immaculate Hospital. His journey of life began Dec. 15, 1926, in Monessen, the second child of two siblings born to the late Dan and Cora Smith. Herbert was united in holy matrimony to Alice Patterson. To this union, his pride and joy Charlotte, Valerie and Herbert Jr. were born. He was affectionately known throughout the Mon Valley as Uncle Buddy and Buddy Boy , a little man with a big heart who dearly loved his family and extended family. He attended Monessen public schools. He was formerly employed by Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Mill in Monessen at a young age and retired with over 30 years of service. Most of his life was spent in Monessen until he decided to move with his daughters in Newport News, Va., in 2008. His passion was his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, all of his nieces, and nephews. It gave him great joy to be able to spend time with all of them every chance he got. He enjoyed his life with his family, listening to music, eating and watching Western movies. During his lifetime, Buddy Boy was an avid follower of the Pittsburgh Steelers. In addition to his parents and grandparents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Alice J. Smith after 29 years of marriage, a sister, Thelma Smith-Majors and longtime companion, Alice Joyner. He leaves to cherish precious memories, his loving daughters, Charlotte Smith Boyd and Valerie Smith Jones, both of Newport News, Va., one son, Herbert Junney (Elder Casandra) Smith Jr. of Columbus, Ohio, five grandsons, Wendalle (Jennifer) Boyd of Rock Springs, Wyo., LeMoyne R. Williams of Pittsburgh, Aubrey D. Jones Jr. of Newport News, Va., Jyron Jay Smith and Michael Smith both of Columbus, Ohio, four granddaughters, Sharina V. (Lamont) Jones of Tampa, Fla., Mya Witcher, Tamara Smith, Sandra Smith, all of Columbus, Ohio, nine great-grandchildren, one brother-in-law, Elmer Patterson, of Suitland, Md., one sister-in- law, Sarah Patterson of Pittsburgh, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins,other close relatives and friends. Visitation will be held 4 to 9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 6, 2014, at Gate of Heaven Church of God In Christ, 644 Reed Ave., Monessen. Funeral services will be held at the church at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014. Interment will take place at Belle Vernon Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to BEVERLY C.
