Obituary

Helen Barbour, 72, of Pittsburgh, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, at her home. Born on April 20, 1937, in Monessen, she was the daughter of the late Rev. John Hughes and Theofa Jefferies-Hughes. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Carl A. Barbour, a son, Daniel Carpenter, five brothers, John Freeman, Floyd, James, Jerry and Sam, and three sisters, Ruth, Thelma and Rose. Helen was formerly employed by The City of Monessen, W.T. Grants, and Youth and Child Services. She was a former member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church and Gate of Heaven COGIC in Monessen, Greater Harvest Fellowship COGIC in North Carolina and spent her last days as a member of Lamb of God Christian Ministries of Pittsburgh. She served on the missionary board, as a youth choir director, choir member and other various capacities during her walk with Christ. She is survived by one son, Michael (Stacey) Smith, seven stepsons, Daniel Jr., Gregory, Darryl, Dennis, Tony and Brent Carpenter and Kevin Barbour, four daughters, Michelle Smith, Tina (Elder Joseph) Bass, Deanna Carpenter, and Terri Barbour, two stepdaughters Darlene Greene-Kilgore and Toshia Carpenter, two sisters, Betty Sartor and June Scott, three brothers, Joseph Hughes, Robert Hughes and Larry Hughes, 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Family and friends will be received Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Newness of Life Church, 489 McKee Ave., Monessen. An additional viewing will be held in the church on Saturday, Jan. 16, from 10 to 11 a.m., followed by a funeral service with Elder J. Richard Bass officiating. Interment will take place in Belle Vernon Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to the BEVERLY C. DRAPER FUNERAL HOME INC., 608 Sixth St., Monessen. (724) 684-6242
