Obituary

George W. Smarelli, 78, of Monessen, died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2006, in Monongahela Valley Hospital Inc. He was born in Monessen on Feb. 22, 1928, the son of the late Giuseppe and Dominica Prociutto Smarelli. He was a member of Epiphany of Our Lord Roman Catholic Church in Monessen and retired in 1986 from the Monessen Plant of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp., having worked as an electronic technician. He was an active Mason, belonging to Tri-County Lodge No. 643 F&AM of Donora, Monessen Royal Arch Chapter 164, McKean Commandery No. 80 of Charleroi, Washington Council No. 1 Royal & Select Master Masons, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Lodge Council Chapter Consistory Valley of Pittsburgh. Mr. Smarelli was a veteran of the Korean War, having served with the U.S. Army in Japan. He is survived by a daughter, Diane Trenk, of Belle Vernon, a brother and sister-in-law, Nick and Sandra Smerelli, of Monessen, two sisters and brothers-in-law, Mamie and Norman Kostelansky, of Monessen, and Rose and Jerry Smyth, of Anchorage, Alaska, six grandchildren, Kimberly Molnar and husband Fe of Perryopolis, John Seman Jr. and wife Sandra, of St. Louis, Mo., Gregory Seman and wife Denise, of Belle Vernon, Karey Backos, of Wickhaven, George Trenk Jr. and wife Annette, of Monongahela, Daniel Trenk and Melissa, of Belle Vernon, seven great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Martin Smarelli, a daughter, Maureen Cavanaugh Backos, a brother, James Smirilli, and two sisters, Connie Gazda and Angeline Stechly. Friends will be received in the DALFONSO-BILLICK FUNERAL HOME INC., 441 Reed Ave., Monessen (724-684-8750), on Friday from 2 to 7 p.m., the hour of the Blessing Service with the Rev. David J. Nazimek officiating. Private interment will be held in Belle Vernon Cemetery.
