Obituary

George Stanko,79,of Fayette City RD.1 (Brownstown),died Friday,Feb. 16,1996,at his home following a lengthy illness. He was born in Pittsburgh,Aug. 20,1916,a son of the late John and Mary Stanko.  Mr. Stanko was Protestant by faith. He was a retired employee of the Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Company, Allenport Plant.  A highly decorated veteran of World War II,he received the Purple Heart and four bronze stars.  He was a staff sergeant,having served with Co. M 315 Inf. 79th Division,in Normandy,Northern France,Rhineland and Central Europe. Surviving are his wife, Georgia Fields Stanko; two daughters,Judith Ann Ggibbs and husband,E. Richard Jr. of Arthurdale,W.Va.,and Linda Lee Mattay and husband John S. Jr. of Fayette City R.D.1; five grandchildren,Adam J. Mattay, Amy Louise,Michelle Grace,Cheryl Elizabeth and Richard Zachary Gibbs;and one sister, Mrs. Mary Males of Belle Vernon R.D.  Friends will be received Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday until 11 a.m. in the Howard W. McCrory Funeral Home,Fayette City,where services will be held with the Rev. James Moffett of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church of Fayette City,officiating.  Interment will be in Belle Vernon Cemetery,Belle Vernon. The Howard W. McCrory Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
