George Claire Van Marter,76,of 307 Meade St.,Monongahela,died Monday,July 10,1978 in Monongahela Division of Mon Valley Hospital. He was 76. Born in Johnstown,May 20,1902,he was the son of the late George and Clara Morgan Van Marter. Mr. Van Marter had moved to Monessen at an early age and lived in the city until 1925 when he married and moved to Belle Vernon. Mr. Van Marter was a Belle Vernon resident until 1964,when he moved to Monongahela. He was an employee of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel,at both the Monessen and Allenport Plants. He retired in 1964 from the Allenport plant with 44 years of service. Mr. Van Marter had served with the U.S.Army in 1919. He was a member of the Monessen American Legion,and was a life member of both the North Belle Vernon Fire Department and the Western Pennsylvania Firemen's Association. He was Protestant by faith. Mr. Van Marter was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie Busch Van Marter,on May 16,1974. Mr. Van Marter is survived by a daughter and son-in-law,Thomas and Pat Scurfield of Monongahela;two granddaughters,Mrs. Melanie Putnak and Meredith Scurfield,both of Monongahela,and two great-grandchildren,Kim and Christopher Putnak. Friends are being received in the Shleby D. Ferguson Funeral Home,700 Broad Ave.,Belle Vernon,from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral services will be held from the funeral home,Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Charles Colas,pastor of the First Baptist Church of Belle Vernon,officiating. Interment will be in Belle Vernon Cemetery. Shelby D. Ferguson,funeral director,is in charge of arrangements.
