Fred C. Speers, 96, one of the oldest natives of Belle Vernon, and a member of a prominent family that laid much of the groundwork for the founding of Belle Vernon and Speers, died Thursday,Feb.13,1964,at the Elizabethtown, Pa., Masonic Home. He was a life-long resident of Speers and was a brother of the late Dr. Stephen M. Speers. The historical Speers family figured very prominently in many civic, business and industrial developments in the Belle Vernon area. The family operated a ferry on the Monongahela River in the district for many years, starting as far back as 1769 in the Maple Creek section. The ferry was passed down from one Speers family to the other with Mr. Fred Speers and W. P. Speers its last operators. The deceased is survived by several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the Harold R.Toner Funeral Home,Belle Vernon,during hours of 2 to 5 and 7 to 10 p.m.beginning on Friday. Service there Saturday,Feb.15,at 2 p.m. in charge of the Rev. Charles K. Sowden,pastor of Speers Methodist Church. Interment,Belle Vernon Cemetery. Harold R.Toner,funeral director.
