Esther M. Burkes,86,of Belle Vernon R.D.3,died Friday,Jan.24,1997,in Mon Valley Hospital. She was born May 9,1910,in Philadelphia, a daughter of the late John and Etta May Coleman Robinson. She formerly worked as a cook for the Belle Vernon Area School District. She was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church,Belle Vernon,where she was the church mother. She was a former member of various choirs of the church. She was a member of the nurses board,the senior missionary,and past matron of the Star of Bethlehem Chapter 34,Monessen,Order of Eastern Star. She was a member of the Senior Action Committee,where she worked on the membership committee and was an organizer. She was a member of the Mon Valley Friends Club. Survivors include her husband,Jesse J. Burkes Sr,;two daughters and one son-in-law,Urella M. Watkins of Teaneck,N.J. and Marie and Leon Johnson of Monessen;two sons and daughters-in-law,David M. and Pat Burkes of Monroeville and Jesse and Stephanie Burkes Jr. of Belle Vernon,one brother,John H. Robinson of Pricedale;eight grandchildren,seven great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. Friends will be received Monday from 2 to 9 p.m. in the Antioch Baptist Church,Belle Vernon,where funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Clifford A. Carter,officiating. Burial will be in Belle Vernon Cemetery. Order of the Eastern Star services will be held Monday at 8 p.m. in the church. The Percy E. Law Jr.Funeral Home Inc.,Donora,is in charge of the arrangements.
