Obituary

MASONTOWN, Dec. 22. — Elmer Haught, aged 52 years, of Belle Vernon, suffered a broken neck about 10 o'clock Monday evening,December 22,1913 when he fell ten feet Into a pit in the blowing room of the Masontown glass works. Death was instantaneous. Mr. Haught, a veteran glass blower, was swinging a heavy roll of glass preparatory to putting it back into the furnace to be reheated, when the glass broke. The impact threw the man backwards into the pit. Apparently he alighted on his neck and the force of the blow broke his neck. He was dead when employes, who had witnessed the accident, rushed to his aid. Mr. Haught's death brings sadness to a family which had planned a happy reunion on Christmas. Three children survive, Mrs. Haught having died several years ago. Yesterday the victim of this evening's accident received a letter from one of his children telling him to be sure and come home to Belle Vernon for Christmas and to bring a turkey with him. Ha had been making plans to spend the day with his family and only a short time before his death discussed his visit with some of his fellow workmen. The children were notified of the accident, this evening, following the removal of the remains from the pit to Johnston's undertaking rooms here the remains were prepared for shipment to Belle Vernon. Late tonight it was not known whether an inquest would be conducted by Coroner Bell. The accident has cast gloom among the employes of the factory and especially among those who were workng at the time of the accident. The glow of the molten glass from the funace lent a thriving background of the stage where the accident occurred.  Mr. Haught was generally Iiked. He was of small stature, weighing about 140 pounds. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Haught, and the family is one of the best known in Belle Vernon.  Jacob Haught is the mail carrier from the Pennsylvania station to the post office and has held the position for many years.
