Elmer E. Bamford; 104; of Rostraver Township; died Friday; Feb. 13; 2009; in Washington Commons Personal Care in Bridgeville. Born in Rostraver Township on April 9; 1904; he was the son of the late James and Anna (Luce) Bamford. He had a great interest in flying; having been born only four months after the first historic flight of the Wright Brothers. His interest developed after witnessing an emergency landing on the family farm in 1924; and from then on flying became his passion. Mr. Bamford eventually bought his own plane; which he would use to take people for rides and even perform stunts; such as wing walking. In addition to flying; he enjoyed hunting; fishing; traveling to South Padre Island; Texas for 37 consecutive winters; and Mr. Bamford was still driving his car at the age of 101. He was retired from USX; Irvin Works; where he was a foreman. Mr. Bamford was a member of Fells United Methodist Church in Rostraver Township. He is survived by his son; David E. Bamford; of Pittsburgh; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents; he was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years; Edith H. (Phillips) Bamford; on May 21; 1999; several brothers and one sister. Friends will be received Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the JAMES C. Scott Berkley officiating. Interment will follow in Belle Vernon Cemetery; Rostraver Township.
