Edward S. Metz, died Wednesday morning, March 12,1913, at 2 a.m. at the Monessen-Charleroi hospital as a result of injuries sustained Thursday evening, February 13th at the hands of Emelio Leberii. Our readers are familiar with the cowardly assault made upon Mr. Metz by Lebteii and only a reference to the tragedy is necessary at this time. The assault was committed in the plant of the Pittsburg Steel, of which Mr. Metz was a foreman and his victim, a workman. Leberii sneaked up behind Metz and struck him over the head with a heavy iron bar and escaped arrest by passing out through the mill entrance at a time when the injured man was being cared for and when excitement was at its height. Mr. Metz was taken to the hospital where it was found his skull had been fractured and the lining of the brain punctured. He was operated upon by Dr. Griffith, and while his chances for recovery were fairly good, Dr. Griffith never gave the family nor friends a great deal of encouragement. But Mr. Metz showed wonderful courage and fortitude and proved himself a gallant fighter. It was the first time in his life that he was confined to bed and it was a hard stroke, and while the suffering was extreme,Mr. Metz passed the hours and the days without a murmur. The condition of the injuries were of such a nature tha the patient was required to be kept still and few people were admitted to the room and this fact was much regretted by Mr. metz who was of a social nature and liked company. A few days ago it was learned that the recovery of the patient was very doubtful, and on Tuesday the wound was examined, but no beneherent results were obtained and Mr.Metz died near the hour of two o'clock Wednesday morning. The removal of Mr.Metz takes from the town another of its good citizens. Mr. Metz was aged about fifty years and leaves a widow ad two children,Mrs. Sidnay Watkins and Donald,a young son. He had been connected with the Pittsburgh Steel company. Mr. Metz like others, had his faults, but he also had his good qualities which so far outnumbered his frailities that no man would be competent to condemn him. He was affliated with the First Presbyterian Church and was a faithful attendent at the services. Rev. MacDonald, pastor the church will have charge of the funeral services which will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 at the home.
Your condolences will be posted here.
