Obituary

Betty V.Bunardzya,a member of a pioneer Belle Vernon family and a talented pianist-organist and dedicated church worker,died Monday,Aug.13,1979,at 5:50 p.m.in Mercy Hospital,Pittsburgh,following a heart seizure. She was 62. Death came just six days short of when she had suffered a heart attack two years ago,followed by other major surgery in June 1978. A resident of 138 State St.,Belle Vernon,Mrs.Bunardzya served the First Presbyterian Church of Belle Vernon as organist since 1937. She also was choir director at the church for the past 15 years after previously having filled that position on an interim basis several times. Mrs.Burardzya had served in a smiilar capacity at the former Rodef Shalom Temple in Charleroi and later Temple Beth Am in Monessen following a merger of the two congregations. She also performed for the former minstrel shows sponsored by the Belle Vernon Lions Club and was in much demand for weddings and other functions. In 1928,Mrs.Bunardzya was crowned as the first queen at the Charleroi Charthene Club's first annual Snow Ball. She was a member of the Magic City Chapter of the American Contract Bridge League. A 1935 graduate of the former Belle Vernon High School,she attended a business college in the state of California. She was employed as a secretarial teachers aide in the Belle Vernon Area School District for the past 12 years. Mrs.Bunardzya was born Elizabeth Anna Vance on Feb.4,1917,a daughter of James H.Vance,retired North Belle Vernon businnessman who survives,and the late Lucy Holder Vance,who preceded her in death in 1946. She was a life-long resident of Belle Vernon. In addition to her father,Mrs.Bunardzya is survived by her husband of 38 years,John R.Bunardzya,a veteran Mon Valley newspaper man who is currently a reporter with the Valley Independent,two sons,Vance R.Bunardzya of Lynnwood (Washington Twp.)and J.William (Bill) Bunardzya at home,her step-mother,Mrs.James H.(Bernadine) Vance of North Belle Vernon,and two grandchildren,Michael J.Bunardzya and Jennifer Lee Bunardzya. Friends will be received at the Shelby D.Ferguson Funeral Home,700 Broad Ave.,Belle Vernon,Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m.at the First Presbyterian Church of Belle Vernon. Interment will be in Belle Vernon Cemetery. In lieu of flowers,the family suggests that memorial contributions in Mrs.Bunardzya's name be made to either the Heart Association or the American Cancer society.
