Edith M. Gates,76, of Country Care Manor,Fayette City, died Thursday,April 14,1994,in Mon Valley Hospital, Carroll Township. Mrs. Gates was born Nov. 21,1917,in Belle Vernon,a daughter of the late John and Anna Samoda Riskey. A lifelong resident of the Belle Vernon area, she had resided in Country Care Manor for the past seven years. Mrs. Gates was a volunteer for many years for the Mon Valley Red Cross. She attended the Belle Vernon Church of the Nazarene and was a member of the Belle Vernon AARP. Her husband, Alvin R. Gates,died Nov. 12,1970. A sister, Dorothy Beall, is also deceased, and two brothers died in infancy. Surviving are two sons, Alvin E. Gates of Fredricksburg, Va., and Dr. Durwin L. Gates of Pittsburgh; four grandchildren,Jeffrey,Steven,Kaitlin and Evan Gates and two great-grandchildren. Friends will be received Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Ferguson Funeral Home Inc.,700 Broad Ave.,Belle Vernon. Services will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Charles A. Kohr of the Belle Vernon Church of the Nazarene officiating. Burial will be in Belle Vernon Cemetery.
