On Monday; Oct. 29; 2007; Dr. Arthur Bela Varga passed away after a lengthy illness. He was born and raised in Donora; graduating in 1939 from Donora High School; where he served as president of his class. After graduation; he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served for six years. He was discharged with the rank of first lieutenant. Dr. Varga was a member of North American Martyrs Church in Monroeville and a former member of St. Therese Church in Uniontown. He was past president of the Fayette County Medical Society; past president of the Uniontown Medical Staff; a life member of VFW Post 47 and Post Surgeon in Uniontown; a life member of Donora Elks Lodge 1264; and a past member and board member of the Mon Valley Pitt Golden Panther organization. Dr. Varga entered the University of Pittsburgh in 1946; received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1949 and his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1952. Following an internship at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh; he practiced general medicine for three years in the Mon Valley area. He returned to Pittsburgh for a residency in anesthesiology. Dr. Varga practiced for 30 years; spending 10 years at Charleroi-Monessen Hospital and 20 years at The Uniontown Hospital; until his retirement in 1986. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years; Lois Jean Tiernan. He is also survived by his children; Dr. Jeffrey M. Varga and wife; Susan; and Michael J. Varga and companion; Michele Pompa; and his grandchildren; Jessica Lauren; Jeffrey Alan Varga and Nicholas Pompa. He was preceded in death by his parents; Nicholas; in 1933; and his mother; Julia Kustvan; in 1988. Friends will be received at the GENE H. CORL FUNERAL HOME INC.; 4335 Northern Pike; Monroeville; Pa. 15146 on Wednesday; Oct. 31; from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday; Nov. 1; at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Belle Vernon Cemetery.
