Obituary

Donn H. Smith, 69, of Monongahela (Forward Township), died Saturday, April 13, 2002, in Mon Valley Hospital. He was born Dec. 21, 1932, in Monessen, a son of the late Edward L. and Thelma Lochrie. He first worked at Pittsburgh Steel in Monessen as a chemist and then for 25 years did research for the Department of Energy, retiring in 1989. He was a 1950 graduate of Monessen High School and then attended California University of Pennsylvania. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church, Monongahela, and was currently recording secretary for the Knights of Columbus, and was very active in operating the monthly bingo at Autumn Arbor Estates in Monongahela. He was also very active working in the St. Vincent DePaul store in Monessen. He was a current officer and past exalted ruler of the Donora Elks Lodge. He was a member of the Senior Center in Charleroi and was also active in operating its bingo. He was a former member of the VFW in Monessen. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Frances L. Remaley Smith, two sons and one daughter-in-law, David E. and Lynne Smith of Carnegie, and Dr. Shawn J. Smith of Atlanta, Ga., two daughters and one son-in-law, Laurie C. and James P. Brady of Gettysburg, and Dr. Amy E. Smith of Stockton, Calif., one brother, Lionel E. Smith of Tequesta, Fla., two sisters, Charlotte Sonafelt of Latrobe, and Nova Nole of Genoa, Neb., seven grandchildren, Angela Kovach, Beth, Hannah, and William Myers, Jennifer, David and Derek Smith. Friends will be received Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the MARSHALL MARRA FUNERAL HOME, 216 Chess St., Monongahela. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Anthony's Church with the Rev. Joseph Feltz, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will be in Belle Vernon Cemetery. The Knights of Columbus will recite the rosary Tuesday at 6:45 p.m. in the funeral home. Donora Elks will conduct services Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home.
