Obituary

Donald Douro, 76, of Fallowfield Township, passed away peacefully from this earth with his family at his side on Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, in Allentown, Pa. He was born July 10, 1932, in East Pittsburgh and was a member of the Coal Center Presbyterian Church and the California American Legion. At age 17, Don enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and proudly served his country during the Korean War. Following his service in 1953, he moved to Shady Avenue in Charleroi. Don retired from Columbia Gas in 1992 with more than 35 years of service and with many friendships that lasted his lifetime. He was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, and a true friend who was always willing to help anyone in need. 'Ace', as he also was known, enjoyed the good things of his life, the outdoors, traveling, adventure and especially his many and long-lasting friendships. As an avid and often vivid story-teller, he entertained many a gathering. His stories brought some of his greatest rewards - the joy and laughter of friends. His knack for storytelling was treasured by many. Hey Ace, tell them the one about was often the way a good story would begin, and laughter and smiles all around is the way it would end. This was a gift he used well and often, and it will surely be missed. Surviving are two sons, Dan (Candice) Douro, of Coopersburg, and John (Christy) Douro, of Ortonville, Mich., three grandchildren, Rheanna, Rachelle and Dawn, three great-grandchildren, Zachary, Avery and Tanner, two brothers- and sisters-in-law, Edward (Cecil) Verkleeren, of Rostraver Township, and John (Barbara) Verkleeren, of Carlsbad, Calif., his siblings, Eleanor Wray, of New Eagle, and Andy Duro, of Dorchester, Mass., and many well loved nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death was his beloved wife, Norma Jean Verkleeren, on April 29, 1993, and her parents, Isadore and Florence Verkleeren. Friends will be received in the CARL J. SPALLINO FUNERAL HOME, 819 Fallowfield Ave., Charleroi, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be held in the funeral home on Wednesday, Oct. 8, at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Robert Colvin officiating. Interment will follow in Belle Vernon Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to: Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund, 22570 Markey Court, Suite 240, Dulles, Va. 20166.
