Obituary

Daniel L. Boots Salotti, 94, of Monessen, died Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005, in Hallsworth House III. He was born in Italy on July 1, 1911, a son of the late Giuseppe and Francesca Luti Salotti. He was a 1930 graduate of Monessen High School and a member of the 1930 undefeated W.P.I.A.L. Championship Greyhound basketball team. Mr. Salotti was a member of Epiphany of Our Lord Roman Catholic Church and its Holy Name Society, the former St. Cajetan R.C. Church and its Holy Name Society, which named him Father of the Year in 1990, and served as an usher for both churches. He also was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 954, a charter member, past president and Melvin Jones Fellow of the Monessen Lions Club, and Monessen Elks Lodge 773. Mr. Salotti served as a member of the Monessen School Board from 1959 to 1969. He was an avid bowler, having bowled with the Epiphany Bowling League, and he was a volunteer with the Monessen Meals on Wheels program. Mr. Salotti was a basketball, football and soccer official, and a life member of the P.I.A.A. and W.P.I.A.L. Officials Association. He was a member of the Mon Valley Sports Hall of Fame, being elected in 1969. Mr. Salotti retired in 1973 with 40 years of service from U.S. Steel, Irvin Works, having worked as a production checker in the Tin Finishing Department. He also worked for over 40 years as an attendant for the Raymond D. Dalfonso Funeral Home, and later the Dalfonso-Billick Funeral Home. Boots , as he was known, composed numerous short stories and poems, and he was famous for laminating pictures and news articles for people throughout the Mon Valley. He is survived by his daughter, Dianne Salotti Vernet, of Belle Vernon, a sister and brother-in-law, Ann and James Hepple, of Valparaiso, Ind., four grandchildren, Dr. Brian Rudolph and wife Anna, of Belle Vernon, Joseph Rudolph and wife Dawn, of Columbus, Ohio, Vincent Vernet and wife Christina, of Pittsburgh, and Vicki Vernet, of Belle Vernon, and by numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Hilda Paterra Salotti, in 1980, a daughter, Sistine Rudolph, in 2003, five brothers, Dominick, Peter, Guido, Victor and Ben, and by his sister, Jenny Cerolini. Friends will be received on Monday, Jan. 2, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the DALFONSO-BILLICK FUNERAL HOME INC., 441 Reed Ave., Monessen (724-684-8750). Services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 3, beginning with a 9:30 a.m. Blessing in the funeral home, followed by a 10 a.m. Funeral Mass in Epiphany of Our Lord R.C. Church. Interment will follow in Belle Vernon Cemetery. The Monessen Lions Club will conduct services Monday at 7:30 p.m., followed by a prayer service conducted by Knights of Columbus Council 954 at 8 p.m.
