Obituary

Clarence I. Winship, a longtime community and church leader in North Charleroi and the mid-Mon Valley, died Saturday (Dec 13, 1980) at 3:30 p.m. at Monongahela Valley Hospital in Carroll Twp. Mr. Winship, who lived at 500 Olive Ave., North Charleroi, was 76. He was born July l, 1904, in Fayette City, Pa , a son of the late Robert H. and ElizabethWinship. Mr. Winship retired Irom the Allenport Plant of Wheeling - Pittsburgh Steel Corp on July I, 1969. He was t he safely supervisor at Allenport and also served as director of the employees' Credit Union there. He previously operated a service station at Third St. and McKean Ave. in Charleroi in 1929. He later operated another station at the North Charleroi side of the Charleroi-Monessen Bridge. Mr. Winship was a member of the Lock No. 4 Volunteer Fire Department in North Charleroi. He served as police chief of North Charleroi Borough from 1938 to 1941 and was a member of North Charleroi Borough Council in the 1950's. He also was mayor of the borough from 1961 through 1969. Mr. Winship was Patriarch-Evangelist of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Mon Valley Congregation, in Charleroi. He was ordained to the office of Priest in 1928. In 1942 he was ordained to the office of Elder. His ordination to High Priest-Patriarch was in 1966. He served as pastor of the North Charleroi congregation from 1948 to 1952 before it moved to its present location at Fifth St.and Washington Ave.in Charleroi. Mr.Winship was a member of the Historical Society of Charleroi,Ministerial Association of Charleroi,and the Fraternal Order of Police of Mon Valley. He is survived by his widow,Edith (Wise) Winship,two sons,Donald Winship and James Winship of Independence,Missouri,a daughter,Jeanne Bruce of North Charleroi,four grandsons,one granddaughter,and one great-granddaughter. A Memorial service will be held Wednesday,Dec.17,1980,at 7:30 p.m.in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints,Fifth and Washington,Charleroi. Friends will be received at the Charleroi Church from 2 to 5 p.m.on Wednesday for a memorial visitation. The family requests that donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Senior citizens Lodge at Camp Temple Grove located at Transfer R.D.2,Pa 16154. Pastor James Evans,Elder Ben Cooper,and Elder Charles Masters will preside at Wednesday's Memorial Service.
