Obituary

Charles W.Hammitt,91,of 337 Green St.,Belle Vernon,died Sunday,Jan.29,1978,at 12:45 p.m.at his home. He was a lifelong resident of the Belle Vernon area,born there on May 30,1886. His parents were the late John and Ruth Helen Wiltsee Hammitt. Mr.Hammitt was a member of the First Baptist Church,Belle Vernon. He retired from the Monessen Plant of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp in 1954. His wife,Maude Tharpe Hammitt,preceded him in death on March 17,1963. Surviving are one daughter,Mrs.Joseph (Zelma) Kostelac of Belle Vernon,with whom he resided,four grandchildren,Mrs.Lois Mazur of Monessen,Mrs.Shirley Whitmyer of Tucson,Ariz.,Mrs.Norma Keller of Livonia,Mich,and Charles DeHusse of East Lake,Ohio,11 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Friends will be received at the Shelby D.Ferguson Funeral Home,Belle Vernon,from 7 to 9 p.m.Monday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.Tuesday. Services will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.with the Rev.Charles Colas of the First Baptist Church,Belle Vernon,officiating. Interment will follow in Belle Vernon Cemetery. Shelby D.Ferguson is funeral director in charge.
