Cal Bernardo;70;of 9 Eggers Ave.;Belle Vernon;died Monday;Jan.20;1997;at 12:40 p.m.in his home. Born Nov.16;1926;in Cleveland;Ohio;he was a son of the late Santo and Theresa Rizzutto Bernardo. A lifelong resident of the Belle Vernon area;he was a member of Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church in Fayette City. Mr.Bernardo retired in 1986 from Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp.;Monessen plant;where he worked in the weld shop. A U.S.Navy veteran of World War II;he was a member of American Legion Post 659 and VFW Post 699;both of Belle Vernon;and Benevolent Order of Elks Lodge 494 of Charleroi. Mr.Bernardo was chariman of the credit committee at Valley First Federal Credit Union. He served on the reunion committee of the Rostraver High School Class of 1945. Survivors include his wife;Vivian Gavazzi Bernardo;two brothers and a sister-in-law;Santo Bernardo Jr.of Los Angeles;Calif.;and Richard and Judy Bernard of Coraopolis;a sister-in-law;Rose Klochak of Belle Vernon;and a brother-in-law;Roger Bridges of Belle Vernon. In addition to his parents;he was preceded in death by a brother;Robert Bernardo Sr.;and a sister;Carole Bridges. Friends will be received Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.in the Leonard J.Parzynski Funeral Home;626 Broad Ave.;Belle Vernon;where a prayer service will be held Thursday at 9:30 a.m.;followed by Funeral Mass at 10 a.m.in Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church;Fayette City;with the Rev.Richard Mackiewicz;pastor;as celebrant. Burial will be in Belle Vernon Cemetery. The family suggests contributions in memory of Cal Bernardo to Community Ambulance Service;Belle Vernon Public Library or Albert Gallatin Hospice. Belle Vernon area VFW Post 699 will conduct a service at 7:15 p.m.Tuesday in the funeral home. Parish wake service will be held at 3 p.m.Wednesday;followed by Belle Vernon American Legion Post 659 service at 7 p.m. Wednesday and Elks Lodge 494 service at 7:30 p.m.Wednesday;all in the funeral home. The Leonard J.Parzynski Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
