A former Monessen man was killed and three companions injured when a car in which they were riding struck a guard rail and overturned on Route 19 about five miles north of Washington early Sunday morning Feb. 22,1959. Killed was Arthur Phillips,39,of Susquehanna St.,Pittsburgh. Mr. Phillips,whose mother and four sisters and a brother live in Monessen,died almost instantly at 3:50 a.m. Mr. Phillips was born in Monessen and was a member of the community's Union Baptist Church. He also belonged to the Carney Post 715,American Legion,Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Musican's Union. He was employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad. He is surived by his wife and three daughters,Linda,Kathleen and Odell;his mother, Mrs. Pearl Phillips of Monessen;four sisters,Mrs. Ruth Tansmore,Mrs. Evelyn Mosley,Mrs. Laverne Farmer and Mrs. Dolores McCraw,all of Monessen,and Mrs. Joyce Brown of Pittsburgh and one brother, Oliver of Monessen. Friends are being received at the Carter Funeral Home,Monessen. Funeral services will be held on Thursday,Feb.26,at 11 a.m. from the Union Baptist Church,Monessen,with the Rev. E.W. Jarrett,church pastor,officiating. Interment will be in Belle Vernon Cemetery. DuBoise Carter,funeral director.
