Obituary

Dr.Angeline Gialas of 4651 Madison Ave.,Lake Wales,Fla.,died Friday,March 25,1988,at 5:20 p.m.in Lakeland Regional Medical Center. She was 59. She was born Dec.10,1928,in Stockdale,a daughter of James Isederis Gialas,who died Oct.9,1973,and Virginia Patricousis Gialas,who died Oct.2,1987. Dr.Gialas was a member of St.Sophia Greek Orthodox Church of Winter Haven,Fla.,and St.Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church,Monessen. She was a member of the California Order of Eastern Star,No.211,the Maryland State Teachers Association and the National Education Association. She was also a member of the Council of Exceptional Children and the National Orton Society. Dr.Gialas was a graduate of California State College. She attended John Hopkins University and St.Louis University,and received her doctorate of education from Loyola University. A well-known educator in Maryland schools and throughout the United States,Dr.Gialas was assistant director for the Council of Exceptional Children,Reston,Va. She was co-author with Roger Saunders,international counselor of dyslexia,of several books about the education of children with learning disabilities. Dr.Gialas also pioneered a program for teaching of aphasic children for the Baltimore County School System. In 1980,she moved from Maryland to Lake Wales,Fla.,where she lived until her death. Survivors include a brother,George Gialas of Cornwell Heights,three sisters,Mrs.Steve (Mary) Salisis of Springfield,Irene Retos,widow of Dr.George Retos,of Washington,Pa.,and Caoline Gialas of Belle Vernon,two nieces,Karen Retos and Vicki Gialas,three nephews,George,Gregory and Gary Retos,one great-niece,Kassandra Retos,and two great-nephews,Brandon and Nicholas Retos. Friends will be received Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.in the Ferguson Funeral Home,700 Broad Ave.,Belle Vernon,where a prayer service will be held Wednesday,March 30,at 10:15 a.m.,followed by funeral services at 11 a.m.in St.Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church,Monessen with the Rev.Nicholas Moskovites officiating,assisted by the Rev.Michael Varvarelis of All Saints Greek Orthodox Church. Burial will be in Belle Vernon Cemetery. Trisagion service will be held Tuesday at 8 p.m.in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to St.Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church of Monessen or St.Sophia Greek Orthodox Church of Winter Haven,Fla. The Ferguson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
