Obituary

Andrew Sloan, 91, of LaPuente, Calif., died Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, in Foothill Presbyterian Hospital, Glendora, Calif. He was born Dec. 12, 1912, in Seneca, S.C., a son of the late Charles and Rosa Dendy Sloan. He was a retired employee of the former Donora Works of United States Steel Corp. Mr. Sloan had been a resident of Donora for 47 years before moving to California in 1997 because of failing health. He was a member of the St. Paul Baptist Church in Donora for over 50 years, where he had served as a trustee for many years. In addition to his parents, Mr. Sloan was preceded in death by his wife, Cornealur C. Bruce Sloan, one daughter, Dorothy Belle, two sons, Harold and Frank Sloan, 13 brothers and two sisters, and two grandchildren, Anthony Thomas and Juanita Bullard. He was the last surviving child of 16 children. He is survived by two daughters, Edith H. Thomas of Lancaster, Calif., and Barbara J. Haynes of LaPuente, Calif., 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends. Friends will be received Sunday from 4 to 9 p.m. in St. Paul Baptist Church, Donora, where funeral services will be held Monday, March 8 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dennis Garner officiating. Interment will be in Belle Vernon Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by the PERCY E. LAW JR. FUNERAL HOMES, 1324 Meldon Ave., Donora.
