Andrew Robert Freeman Sr.; a lifelong resident of Monessen; died from a massive heart attack in the Westside Rehabilitation Center in Dothan; Ala.; on Monday; March 12; 2012. Mr. Freeman; who had a short history of heart problems; was recuperating at the center with expectations of being released Friday; March 16. He moved to Dothan in February 2009; to live permanently with his son; Mark. Until the time of his death; Mr. Freeman maintained his home in Monessen; blessed with being able to make periodic visits. Born on Sept. 21; 1926; he was the only child of the late Grady and Cleta Brooks Freeman. Mr. Freeman was known as Hoot by those who knew him well. It was a nickname given him while serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was known as Andy by his associates. Mr. Freeman was a longtime and loyal employee of the City of Monessen. During his tenure; he served in several capacities; the last of which was superintendent of streets. He took his job seriously and was able to retire after more than 50 years of service. Besides his parents; Mr. Freeman was predeceased by his wife; Ernestine; his son; Rodney Sr.; and his son-in-law; Floyd T. Carter. He is survived by two sons; Mark and Andrew Jr.; his daughter; Janet; two daughters-in-law; Sherion and Gloria; a grandson; Rodney; and several cousins. Friends will be received at the Union Baptist Church on Friday; March 16; from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. from the church with the Reverend Jack Howell; a close family friend; presiding. In lieu of flowers or food; friends are asked to make a donation to the Union Baptist Church; 670 McMahon Ave.; Monessen; or to the Dothan Community Church; 4390 Westgate Parkway; Dothan; Alabama 36303.
