Obituary

A Monessen man was killed and another injured Saturday night,April 25,1964,when the car in which they were riding went off a bridge and plunged into a stream near Emporium,Cameron County. Andrew (Pepe) Kurtak Jr.,38,of 704 E.Luce Ave.,was dead on arrival at the Andrew Kaul Memorial Hospital at St.Mary's,at 8:05 p.m. He died of a broken neck. Mr.Kurtak,John Watson and Edmund Howsky were on a week's vacation,fishing in the area and staying at Howsky's cottage,something they had been doing for 20 years. The vacation period was to have ended yesterday. Kurtak and Watson were returning to the cottage after buying supplies when the crash occurred on the narrow one-lane bridge having a sharp turnoff. Howsky had stayed at the cottege. Mr.Kurtak had been employed in the bundling room of the Monessen plant of Pittsburgh Steel Co. He was a member of St.John the Divine R.O.Church of Monessen,the Eagles,Greater Beneficial Union,Polish National Alliance and Turner's,all of Monessen,and the Charleroi Moose. Surviving are his mother,Mrs.Mary Kurtak at home,two brothers,Michael of Monessen,and Joseph at home,two sisters,Mrs.Adam (Ann) Klawcho and Mrs.Joseph (Elizabeth) Shirley,both of Pricedale. His father,Andrew,Sr.,died March 8,1962. Friends will be recieved at Check's Home for Funerals,Monessen,after 7 p.m.Monday,April 27. Blessing service there Wednesday,April 29,at 1 p.m.followed by an additional service at 1:30 p.m.in St.Johns the Divine R.O.Church,Monessen,in charge of the Very Rev.John W.Giovrusik,pastor. Interment,Belle Vernon Cemetery. John L.Kravets,funeral director.
