Obituary

Employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad company for only two days,Alfred Robert Hale,aged 17,of Belle Vernon,Allegheny couny,was run down by empty engine No.2411 on Thursday afternoon,September 19,1918,at 3 o'clock and instantly killed under the wheels. The accident happened as Hale,who was employed in the No.3 engine house at Sixteenth street,was returning to his work after attending a patriotic rally in the shop department. Hale failed to notice the approach of the empty engine,in charge of James R.Miller,and the workman was struck by the engine and knocked down. Death was instantaneous. Alfred R.Hale came to Altoona on Tuesday from his home in Belle Vernon and he resided with his sister,Mrs.R.J.Gaines of 2812 Beale avenue. Coincident with the lad's death is the fact that his father,Alfred R.Hale,deceased,met his death is a similar accident five years ago. The misfortunate youth was born on Feb.17,1901,the son of Alfred R.Sr.,deceased,and Mrs.Marian Robbins Hale of Belle Vernon. He is survived by his mother and the following brothers and sister,William,Russell,Harry and Hartford,all of Belle Vernon,and Mrs.R.I.Gaines of this city.
